Judging process

Interviews

In July and August 2022, CHRO South Africa will interview all nominated CHROs to get a clear picture of his or her drive, motivation, vision and results. We ask each of the judges to be present during at least two of the interviews, each of which will be conducted by two judges and a senior representative or our editorial team. The reports of these interviews will be added to the dossier of each CHRO and will be used by the judges to determine their individual votes. The goal of the interview is to get insight in the CHRO’s involvement in the overall success of the company and the way he or she has distinguished himself or herself. To help structure the interview, and to make sure we address the same issues in each interview, we have created a set of interview questions as a guideline.

There are no specific sets of questions for the overall categories (Young) CHRO of the Year. The votes for the specific categories will be tallied to determine who wins the Young & CHRO of the Year Award.
The goal of the interview is to get insight in the CHRO’s involvement in the overall success of the company and the way he or she has distinguished himself or herself. To help structure the interview, there is a standard set of interview questions as a guideline.

Each CHRO has to answer four basic questions in four compulsory categories:

  • Strategy & Leadership
  • Transformation & Empowerment
  • HR & Technology
  • Learning & Development
  • Talent Management
  • Employee Value Proposition

Scoring

By the end of September 2022, CHRO South Africa will have finalised all dossiers and interviews for assessment. Based on the dossiers, CHRO South Africa’s internal selection committee will shortlist between 20 and 25 CHROs for the final scoring round, including a minimum young CHROs (40 years and younger). We will send the shortlist with all the dossiers to the panel of judges with a scorecard on the front page. Judges will be asked to score each CHRO on the shortlist on a scale from 1 to 10 in each category. By adding up all the points we determine the winner for each award category. The (Young) CHRO of the Year are decided by tallying the category scores.

What happens in the case of a tie?

In case of a tie in one of the award categories, the nominee who receives the highest score in the CHRO of the Year vote wins the award in that category. If there is still a tie, the nominee who scores highest in the Strategy & Leadership category wins. If there is still a tie, the judges will be asked to vote for one of the tied nominees in a second round.

Integrity of the awards

Integrity and ethical conduct are crucial assets of good leaders. In times where both the public and private sector are subject to important scrutiny, CHRO Award winners need to be role models and shining lights of excellence. In this light, CHRO South Africa reserves the right to publically suspend or revoke CHRO Awards. This will happen, in consultation with the panel judges, if information about a CHRO Awards winner becomes available that is damaging to the stature and integrity of the CHRO Awards.
